86 Bru na Gruadan

Campus is a buzz with students for Fresher's Week. The undergraduates are partying with beer, dance, foam and pizza. We are commandeering free WiFi as our home is not yet hooked up to the modern convenience. Sitting in a corner we overlook campus. The Arbory, the Living Bridge, the bike paths - all in flirting conversation with the mist as it rolls off the Shannon. The buzz reminds us of Bru na Gruadan - our neighbourhood. Postal codes don't exist here so our mailing address is simply:

86 Bru na Gruadan
Castletroy, Co. Limerick
Ireland

Gruadan, our house, is owned by an IT worker at UL, and along with Sean from Wisconsin and Steven from Manchester, we are starting to make it a home.

Bru na Gruadan is a lively neighbourhood. Next to several student complexes, it is full of young families. We met our neighbours from 85 this week. While many of the families here are immigrants from eastern Europe, our neighbours and their three young children are from the Congo.

At 18:00, the moms chat on the sidewalks along our street as children run around. Doors are left open so parents can hear their children climbing the walls around the neighbourhood. Some boys with shaved heads and rat tails kick a football around the nettles, while other children tussle in the grass or ride their bikes up and down the street. Occasionally, a pony will ride through the neighborhood and mow the grass.
